Short answer: on a weekend, yes. On a quiet weekday you can still walk into some tasting rooms, but reservations are becoming the norm across the Hill Country.
Why wineries moved to reservations
Seated tastings are a better experience. You get a host, a table and time with the wines instead of standing three-deep at a bar. That means each winery can only seat so many people per hour, and groups take up a lot of that space.
Groups have extra rules
Several estates require approval or a reservation for groups of six or more, and some have firm caps. A few, like Signor Vineyards, keep their tasting areas adults-only and pet-free. Check our winery guide for each winery's current policy.
How to plan if you're on your own
- Pick three wineries that are near each other.
- Book times about 90 minutes apart to allow for travel.
- Set your designated driver before the first pour.
- Confirm the day before, especially in harvest season and around holidays.
Or let us book it
On every Absolute Charm tour, we make the reservations, so your table is ready when you walk in. Add our Tasting Pass for a flight at every stop, or just order a glass. That's one of the things guests mention most in our reviews.
Make it easy on yourself
Pickup at your rental, every stop reserved, and a local guide at the wheel.
